When Overthinking Keeps You Stuck: Trusting Yourself When There Isn't a Perfect Decision

Jul 21, 2026

Have you ever found yourself replaying the same decision over and over in your mind?

You make a list of pros and cons. You ask for advice. You research. You imagine every possible outcome. You tell yourself you'll decide when you have a little more clarity.

Days pass.

Sometimes weeks.

And instead of feeling more confident, you feel more overwhelmed.

If this sounds familiar, you're not alone.

Whether you're navigating a career change, a leadership challenge, a relationship, grief, or simply deciding what comes next, overthinking has a way of convincing us that if we just think a little longer, we'll discover the perfect answer.

But what if the peace you're searching for isn't found in making the perfect decision?

What if it's found in trusting yourself enough to make one?

Recently, a coaching client shared a story that many of us can relate to.

Her birthday had come and gone, and instead of enjoying the day, she spent hours trying to decide what she wanted to do. Dinner? A day trip? Time alone? Time with family?

The more she thought about it, the harder it became.

By the time we met, she wasn't frustrated because she hadn't celebrated her birthday. She was frustrated with herself.

As she shared her experience, I realized we weren't really talking about birthdays.

We were talking about something much bigger.

Somewhere along the way, many of us began believing there is one perfect decision—and if we don't find it, we'll regret the choice we make.

So we wait.

We gather more information.

We seek one more opinion.

We hope certainty will arrive before we have to choose.

The problem is, life rarely works that way.

Eventually, standing still becomes its own decision.

And often, the thing keeping us exhausted isn't making the wrong choice.

It's carrying the weight of never making one.

As a mindfulness coach, I've learned that overthinking is rarely about the decision itself.

It's usually about fear.

Fear of making a mistake.

Fear of disappointing someone.

Fear of choosing a path we can't undo.

Fear that we'll discover we weren't capable of making the "right" choice after all.

When we begin living from that place, we slowly stop trusting ourselves.

Here's what I've discovered, both in my own life and in the lives of the clients I have the privilege of coaching:
Movement creates clarity far more often than clarity creates movement.

We tend to believe we need complete certainty before taking the next step.

Yet most of life's wisdom comes after we've taken it.

Every experience teaches us something.

Every decision reveals new information.

Every season helps us grow into the next version of ourselves.

That doesn't mean every decision will unfold exactly as we hoped.

It means we become more capable of navigating whatever unfolds.

And that's where self-trust begins.

It isn't believing you'll always make the perfect decision.

It's believing you'll meet yourself with wisdom, compassion, and resilience no matter what happens next.

When you notice yourself circling the same decision this week, pause for just a moment and ask yourself:

  • Am I waiting because I truly need more information?
  • Or am I waiting because I'm hoping certainty will remove my discomfort?
  • What would change if I trusted myself to handle whatever comes next?

Those questions gently shift us from fear to awareness.

From perfectionism to presence.

From indecision to intentional living.

One of the greatest gifts mindfulness offers is the understanding that peace isn't created by controlling every outcome.

Peace is created by how we choose to meet each moment.

That doesn't mean we stop caring.

It means we stop believing our worth depends on getting everything exactly right.

We begin trusting ourselves to learn.

To adapt.

To grow.

To begin again if necessary.

Because that is what resilient people do.

A Gentle Reflection

Where in your life have you been waiting for certainty before allowing yourself to move forward?

What is one small, intentional step you can take this week—not because you have every answer, but because you trust yourself enough to take the next one?

If this Gentle Mindful Moment resonated with you, I'd love to continue the journey together.

Remember...

Creating a life by design doesn't require perfect decisions.

It requires learning to trust the person designing it.

Peace doesn't come from making perfect decisions. It comes from trusting yourself enough to navigate what unfolds.
