How to Trust Yourself When Life Doesn't Go According to Plan
Jul 06, 2026
At the beginning of this year, I chose a simple intention.
Not a business goal.
Not a fitness goal.
Not even a financial goal.
Just six words.
Presence over pressure.
At the time, I thought it would simply remind me to slow down, breathe a little deeper, and be more intentional with how I moved through my days.
I had no idea life would ask me to practice those words in ways I never could have imagined.
If there's one thing I've learned this year, it's this:
Life rarely unfolds according to our carefully crafted plans.
Even when we do all the "right" things, there are seasons that stretch us, relationships that change us, unexpected losses that humble us, and decisions that don't come with clear answers.
Maybe you've found yourself there too.
Perhaps you're standing at a crossroads, wondering which direction to take.
Maybe you're navigating a career change, caring for someone you love, grieving a loss, leading a team through uncertainty, or simply feeling disconnected from yourself.
If so, I want you to know something that has become deeply personal for me.
The goal isn't to eliminate uncertainty.
The goal is to strengthen the person navigating it.
Why Uncertainty Feels So Uncomfortable
One of the most fascinating things I've learned through studying mindfulness, neuroscience, emotional resilience, and human behavior is that our brains are constantly trying to predict what comes next.
Prediction creates efficiency.
Familiarity feels safe.
When the future becomes unclear, our nervous system often interprets uncertainty as potential danger.
That can lead to overthinking, decision fatigue, anxiety, emotional exhaustion, and an almost desperate desire to find the "right" answer before taking the next step.
I've certainly experienced that.
But I've also discovered something equally important.
The mind isn't the only place where wisdom lives.
We Are More Than Our Thoughts
Over the years, my own journey has been shaped by many teachers and traditions.
Mindfulness taught me to observe my thoughts without immediately believing them.
Neuroscience helped me understand how repeated thoughts and emotions shape the neural pathways that influence how we experience the world.
My understanding of energy through Reiki reminded me that our internal state affects far more than our thinking. It influences our presence, our relationships, and how we move through life.
My spiritual practice—including prayer, meditation, and the quiet belief that we are part of something greater than ourselves—has given me a sense of peace that doesn't depend on having every answer.
Although these approaches come from different perspectives, they all point toward a similar truth.
Our thoughts, emotions, energy, and spirit are deeply connected.
When one shifts, the others begin to shift as well.
The Relationship That Changes Everything
One of the greatest transformations isn't learning to control life.
It's transforming the relationship we have with our own inner world.
When we become aware of the stories we're telling ourselves...
When we notice the emotions we've been carrying...
When we regulate our nervous system instead of reacting from it...
When we reconnect with the quiet wisdom beneath the mental noise...
Something remarkable happens.
We begin trusting ourselves again.
Not because life has become predictable.
Because we've become more present.
Before We Can Create a Life by Design...
There's a sentence that has been living in my heart recently.
Before we can create a life by design, we have to learn to trust the person designing it.
Read that again.
So many of us spend years searching for certainty.
The perfect decision.
The perfect timing.
The guarantee that everything will work out exactly as planned.
I've realized that's not where confidence comes from.
Confidence isn't knowing what will happen.
Confidence is trusting yourself regardless of what happens.
This understanding is at the heart of my work through the Pathway to Inner Peace - Featuring the 4R Method®, where I help leaders and high-achieving professionals reconnect with themselves by transforming the relationship they have with their thoughts, emotions, energy, and spirit. My Pathway to Inner Peace®
We begin by recognizing the unconscious thoughts, emotions, and patterns that quietly shape our experience.
We gently release what no longer serves us.
We rewire new ways of thinking, feeling, and responding with intention.
And from that place, we begin to radiate greater peace, clarity, resilience, and confidence into every area of our lives.
Transformation doesn't happen because life becomes easier.
It happens because we become more aligned with who we truly are.

A Gentle Invitation This Week
Instead of asking yourself,
"How can I be certain?"
Try asking,
"How can I become someone who trusts myself more deeply?"
Notice how different those questions feel.
One searches outside of you.
The other invites you inward.
Reflection
As you move through this week, I invite you to pause and reflect.
- Where in your life are you waiting for certainty before taking your next step?
- What experiences remind you that you've successfully navigated uncertainty before?
- What would change if you trusted your ability to respond rather than your ability to predict?
Sometimes the next chapter doesn't require a perfect plan.
Sometimes it simply asks us to take one mindful step forward.
One breath.
One choice.
One moment of presence.
After all, life by design doesn't begin when uncertainty disappears.
It begins the moment we remember that the wisdom, resilience, and light we've been searching for have been quietly growing within us all along.
