Recognizing Emotional Triggers Before They Take Over

Pausing in with you today…

Have you ever found yourself reacting to something…
and immediately thinking:

Why did I just respond like that? 

The tone.
The tension.
The shutdown.
The overwhelm.

It feels like it came out of nowhere.

But it didn’t.

There was a moment—just before the reaction—
where your system was already activated.

Most people miss that moment.

That moment is your trigger.

What is a trigger, really?


A trigger isn’t the situation.

It’s your body’s learned response to something that feels familiar.

A tone of voice.
A look.
A delay in response.
Feeling dismissed.
Feeling out of control.

Your nervous system recognizes it before your mind has time to explain it.

And in that instant… your body shifts.

Heart rate changes.
Breathing tightens.
Muscles contract.

And then the reaction follows.

Why it feels like it happens so fast


Because it does.

Your nervous system is designed to protect you.

It doesn’t pause to ask:

“Is this actually a threat?”

It responds based on what it has learned. What it has unconsciously memorized throughout the years.

Triggers are not the problem.

They are signals.

They are showing you where your system has been conditioned to react.

And more importantly…

They are showing you where your power is. 

The moment that changes everything


There is a space between:

Activation → Reaction

It may feel small.

But it’s there.

And the more aware you become, the more that space expands.

Just noticing.

This is how you interrupt autopilot


Not by controlling the reaction…

But by catching the activation.

Because once you see it, you’re no longer inside of it.

You’re observing it.

And from that place…

You can choose differently.

This is where the power lies.

A simple practice for today


The next time you feel a reaction building:

Pause.

Take one slow breath.

And ask yourself:

👉 What am I feeling right now… before I respond? 

That one question begins to rewire everything.

You’re not “too sensitive”


You’re not “overreacting.”

You’re responding from patterns that were learned and anchoring in over time.

And what is learned…

can be unlearned.

Gently.
Consistently.
Powerfully.
