Presence Over Pressure: What My Body Taught Me Last Week

The end of last week, I found myself flat on the couch with a stomach bug.

Nothing dramatic.
Nothing catastrophic.
Just enough to stop me.

And here’s the thing…

It did not surprise me.

For those of you who have been with me for a while, you know my digestive system has always been my barometer. Since I was a little girl. What today we might call IBS. A sensitive gut. A sensitive system. A body that speaks clearly when I’ve extended past my energetic edge.

For over 25 years, through the practices I teach and live every day, I have kept those symptoms beautifully at bay. Through awareness, intentional stress management, energy practices, and honoring the signals my body gives me.

But the last few weeks?

Full calendar.
Public-facing work.
Holding emotional space.
Heavy collective energy.
Pouring into high school students about mental wellness and resilience.

I was giving. And giving well.

And my body said… pause.

My husband had a touch of it and breezed right through.
My system? Not so much.

Because my body is not just biology.

It’s my barometer.

And this month, that is exactly what we are talking about.

February was about emotional awareness and resilience.
“I can be with life as it is.”

March moves us into something deeper.

“I can intentionally lead my inner state.”

Sometimes inner leadership looks like strength.

And sometimes it looks like canceling the meeting, turning off the noise, and honoring replenishment without guilt.

The external world has felt heavy lately. Unsettled. Charged. As someone who works with the public, who leads, who teaches, and who holds space for others… I am exposed to a lot of that unsettled energy.

And here’s the truth:

If we do not choose where our energy goes, the world will choose it for us.

My guiding theme for this year has been presence over pressure.

Presence and purpose create prosperity.

Replenishment is not indulgent.
It is intelligent.

It is burnout recovery before burnout happens.
It is intentional energy management.
It is embodied awareness.

This week, I invite you to gently ask yourself:

Where is my body whispering for attention?

Where am I choosing pressure over presence?

What would intentional restoration look like for me right now?

You do not need a crisis to recalibrate.

You need awareness.
And then direction.

That is inner leadership.
