Navigating Life Changes: Creating Space for Who You're Becoming
Oct 16, 2026
Embracing change without having it all figured out.
I've been a little quieter these past few weeks.
My husband and I have been in the midst of moving into our new home, and as anyone who has ever moved knows, there's a whole lot more involved than packing boxes and changing addresses!
We've been clearing out the home we lived in for years, cleaning every nook and cranny, sorting through what to keep and what to release, while gradually unpacking and settling into our new space.
And we're still not finished!
But somewhere in the midst of all that activity, I found myself reflecting on something much deeper than the move itself.
I remember when we first moved into our previous home. It was everything I had envisioned. I had been very intentional about what I wanted to create, and when we arrived, it felt wonderful. Alive. Vibrant. Completely aligned with that season of our lives.
That home held so much living. Children, family gatherings, laughter, the unexpected challenges of COVID, and countless ordinary moments that became treasured memories.
I loved that chapter.
And yet, as time passed, I began to feel ready for something different.
Not because anything was wrong. Not because I was unhappy or needed to escape. But because I was evolving.
Today, when I look out the windows of our new home, I see a pond with ducks swimming and a farm in the distance. There's a different energy here. Quieter. More peaceful. More centered.
And it feels right for who I am today.
Interestingly, we committed to this home on April 1, before I knew everything this year would bring, including the loss of someone dear to us and the many emotional demands of the months that followed.
Looking back, I find myself appreciating how that forward momentum was already underway.
This year has taught me so much about choosing presence over pressure, trusting myself through uncertainty, and intentionally living the life that's unfolding in front of me.
And now, here I am, living that practice in a very tangible way.
A New Beginning Doesn't Mean Recreating the Old One
Here's something else I've been noticing as we settle into our new home.
I haven't unpacked every box. There are still pictures waiting to be hung, rooms that aren't quite finished, and plenty of things yet to find their place.
But I'm not rushing to get it all done.
In fact, I'm being very intentional about what goes back on the walls and what I choose to surround myself with.
I don't want to simply recreate our old home in a new space.
I want this home to reflect who we are today, the life we're creating, and the feeling I want people to experience when they walk through our door.
And that takes a little time, thought, and space.
It also means being comfortable not having everything figured out just yet.
As I was reflecting on this, I couldn't help but think about how often we do the opposite in our own lives.
We step into a new chapter, whether it's a career change, a leadership role, a relationship, or a personal transition, and without even realizing it, we begin filling that new space with familiar habits, expectations, and patterns.
Some of those things continue to serve us beautifully. Others may no longer fit.
And unless we create a little space to notice the difference, we can find ourselves recreating what was rather than intentionally choosing what comes next.
A new beginning doesn't require us to bring everything from the old one.
How Do You Stay Grounded When Life Keeps Changing?
Change, even when it's something we welcome, can be unsettling.
We may feel excited about what's ahead while still adjusting to everything that's different.
And for those of us who are accustomed to being capable, productive, and getting things done, there's often an expectation that we should adapt quickly and have everything under control.
I see this in my executive life coaching work, too.
A leader steps into a new role and feels pressure to have all the answers. A professional navigates organizational change and wonders how to regain confidence. Someone who has spent years building a successful career begins questioning whether the way they've been living and working still reflects what matters most.
These moments can challenge our sense of stability and self-trust.
And sometimes our instinct is to work harder, plan more, or try to figure everything out before allowing ourselves to feel settled.
But what if finding our ground isn't about having all the answers?
What if it's about learning to stay connected to ourselves while those answers unfold?
That's what inner steadiness means to me.
It doesn't mean life stops changing or that we never experience uncertainty, stress, or overwhelm.
It means we develop the awareness and ability to recognize what's happening within us, create a little space before reacting, and choose how we want to move forward.
We can be grateful for what was, excited about what's next, and still be finding our footing.
All of those experiences can exist together.
The Power of the Pause: Choosing What Comes With You
One of the foundations of my Pathway to Inner Peace - Featuring the 4R Method® is learning to recognize the patterns, thoughts, and expectations that influence how we experience life.
Because before we can intentionally choose something different, we need to become aware of what we're carrying.
And that's where the pause becomes so valuable.
When we're constantly moving from one responsibility to the next, we can easily default to familiar ways of thinking and responding.
We may continue saying yes when we want to say no. Take on responsibilities that no longer belong to us. Hold ourselves to expectations that once motivated us but now leave us exhausted.
Or continue pursuing something simply because it's what we've always done.
The pause gives us an opportunity to ask whether those choices still reflect who we are and what matters to us.
It creates room to release what no longer serves us while honoring everything that helped bring us to this moment.
And here's something I continue to appreciate.
We don't have to reject our past to embrace our future.
We can honor the people we've been, the choices we've made, and the chapters we've lived while giving ourselves permission to grow.
That's part of creating a life by design, not one of default.
Your Gentle Mindful Moment: What Deserves a Place in Your Next Chapter?
I'd love to invite you to take a few moments for yourself today.
Find a comfortable place to sit. Allow your shoulders to soften and take a few slow, gentle breaths.
Notice where you are, right here, right now.
You don't need to solve anything in this moment. You don't need to know exactly what comes next.
Simply give yourself permission to be present.
And when you're ready, gently consider these questions:
- What in my life continues to feel aligned with who I am today?
- Is there something I've been carrying simply because it's familiar?
- What would I like to create more space for in this next chapter?
- How do I want to feel as I move forward?
You don't need to answer every question.
Perhaps one will resonate. Maybe an answer will come immediately, or maybe it's something you'll continue to reflect on.
Allow yourself that space.
And remember, you don't have to unpack every box, hang every picture, or have every detail figured out to begin feeling at home in your life.
Sometimes the most meaningful changes begin with one intentional choice.
One moment of awareness.
One willingness to trust yourself as you grow.
Maybe the beauty of a new beginning isn't having a blank canvas to fill but having the freedom to decide what truly belongs.
And that, my friends, is how we continue creating a life by design, not one of default.
