Is It True, or Is It Familiar? How Old Patterns Can Keep Us From Living in Alignment
Sep 07, 2026
I’ve been noticing something about myself lately.
There are thoughts I reach for almost automatically. Emotions that can feel almost rehearsed. Expectations I place on myself without ever consciously deciding that I still want to live by them.
And there are certain relationships where I know the dance so well that I can practically anticipate the next step.
Someone says something. I interpret it through the lens of our history. An old feeling gets activated. I anticipate what they are going to say or do next, and before I know it, I am responding from a familiar place.
Sometimes I catch myself in the middle of it and think, Wait. Is that actually what is happening here? Or is this simply what I have become accustomed to expecting?
That question has been sitting with me.
Is it true now, or is it familiar?
There is a difference.
And I believe recognizing that difference is an important part of what it means to live in alignment.
When Self-Awareness Isn't the Whole Story
Many of the people I work with have already done a tremendous amount of self-exploration.
They have read the books. Listened to the podcasts. Worked with coaches or therapists. Meditated. Journaled. Attended leadership development programs. Maybe even consumed their fair share of what we used to simply call “self-help.” There is a term that takes me back. š
They are often incredibly self-aware.
They know they tend to overthink. They know uncertainty is inevitable. They know they cannot control other people's reactions. They recognize their perfectionism, people-pleasing or tendency to take on too much responsibility.
And yet knowing something doesn't necessarily mean we have stopped living from the old pattern.
We may understand that uncertainty is unavoidable while still expending tremendous energy trying to predict what will happen or lessen the discomfort of not knowing.
We may know that another person's response isn't ours to manage and still find ourselves rehearsing the conversation beforehand.
We may recognize that we put too much pressure on ourselves and wake up tomorrow morning and pick that pressure right back up.
This isn't a failure of self-awareness.
It is an invitation to take our awareness deeper.
What Has Become More Habit Than Truth?
We usually think of habits as things we do.
But we can also have habitual thoughts, emotional responses, expectations and ways of interpreting what is happening around us.
We can even have habitual ways of seeing ourselves.
And when something has been repeated long enough, familiarity can begin to feel a lot like truth.
This is just how I am.
I know how this is going to go.
If I don't take care of it, no one will.
They're probably upset with me.
I can't relax until I know what is going to happen.
Maybe.
But maybe not.
What happens when, instead of immediately accepting the familiar thought as truth, we become curious about it?
Sometimes We Know the Dance Too Well
Relationships are one of the places I notice this most clearly.
Over time, we develop a kind of dance with the people in our lives. We know their moves, and they know ours.
One person says something in a particular tone. The other gets defensive. One withdraws. The other pursues. One becomes frustrated. The other tries to smooth things over.
Sometimes we are responding not only to the person standing in front of us today, but also to years of experiences we've had with them.
We already know what we think they mean.
We anticipate what comes next.
And we step into our familiar part of the dance.
This happens at work too.
A colleague questions your recommendation and you immediately feel the need to defend it. Your boss asks to speak with you and your mind starts filling in the blanks before the conversation has even happened. You receive an email with a certain tone and your body reacts before you have finished reading it.
That doesn't make the reaction wrong.
It makes it worth noticing.
Because perhaps the more useful question isn't simply, Why do I keep doing this?
Perhaps it is:
Does this response reflect what is happening now and who I am now, or am I stepping into a familiar part of the dance?
This Is Why the Pause Matters
This is one of the reasons I talk so much about the Power of the Pause.
The pause isn't only about stopping ourselves from saying or doing something we'll regret.
It creates space between what happens and the meaning we immediately give it. Between someone's behavior and our familiar response. Between uncertainty and our instinct to control it.
And inside that space, we can notice.
What is actually happening right now?
What am I assuming?
Is something familiar being activated?
Is this genuinely how I want to respond now?
The purpose isn't to interrogate every thought we have or second-guess ourselves even more. Goodness knows most high achievers don't need another reason to analyze themselves.
The purpose is awareness.
Mindfulness invites us to observe what is happening here and now with curiosity and without judgment.
And you may pause, recognize the old dance...and take the same step anyway.
I do.
We are human.
But this time, you noticed.
And noticing creates the possibility of a choice that wasn't available when you were simply moving through the steps automatically.
Recognizing the Pattern While We're Living It
For nearly 20 years, I have had the privilege of doing this work with hundreds, and through my programs and teaching, thousands of people.
One thing I have seen again and again is that meaningful change rarely begins by forcing ourselves to behave differently.
It begins with awareness.
That understanding became foundational to the methodology I developed and eventually trademarked, The Pathway to Inner Peace® Featuring the 4R Method®: Recognize, Release, Rewire and Radiate.
We begin with Recognize because we cannot consciously change what we cannot see.
But recognizing a pattern goes deeper than being able to say, “I know I overthink,” or “I know I'm a people-pleaser.”
The deeper practice is learning to recognize the pattern while we are living it.
There I go trying to predict the outcome.
I'm already preparing myself for how I think this person will react.
I'm putting pressure on myself because not knowing feels uncomfortable.
I'm stepping into our old dance.
No judgment. Just recognition.
That creates space to Release what no longer serves us, Rewire what we want to choose differently and eventually Radiate more of who we authentically are.
To me, Radiate is when the work we've been doing on the inside begins to become visible in the way we actually live.
That is where alignment starts becoming something we embody rather than simply understand.
A Gentle Practice for This Week
This week, don't give yourself another self-improvement project.
Simply notice.
When you feel a familiar reaction, expectation or thought arise, give yourself a moment before doing anything with it.
Take a breath and gently ask:
What is actually happening right now?
What might I be adding because it is familiar?
Does this response reflect what is true for me now?
You don't have to change the answer.
You don't have to fix anything.
Just notice.
Because the moment we recognize that something may be a familiar step rather than an inevitable one, we have something we didn't have before.
A choice.
And perhaps that is where living in alignment truly begins.
