Overcoming My Own Survival Mode


Over 25 years ago, I realized I was so busy being everything to everyone — the friend who always said “yes,” the perpetual fixer, the person who made sure everyone else was okay even if I wasn’t. I became an expert chameleon, trying to be who others needed me to be, thinking that if everyone else was happy, I’d feel fulfilled too.

Spoiler alert: it doesn’t work like that. 😉

Even though I was thriving on the outside, something felt off. I knew deep down that the life I was living wasn’t fully aligned with who I wanted to be. That girl — the one racing to please everyone — wasn’t far from my true self, but she was exhausted.

What changed everything was realizing I needed to stop living on autopilot and start creating a life on my own terms. That meant setting healthy boundaries, saying “no” (even when it was uncomfortable) so I could say “yes” to what really mattered — like showing up fully for my children, honoring my values, and redefining success beyond what society says it should look like.

Sure, life still brings challenges. But now, through the stillness I cultivate with prayer and meditation — and by discovering and developing myself through the Pathway to Inner Peace — I meet them from a place of peace and strength, not exhaustion.

The Trap of Survival Mode


Survival mode happens when your days are ruled by stress, obligations, and autopilot thinking. Instead of feeling alive, you feel like you’re enduring life. Signs you’re stuck here include:

  •  Lacking excitement about the future.
  •  Experiencing chronic fatigue despite "checking all the boxes."
  •  Sensing you’re living someone else’s version of success.


Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn
, a pioneer of mindfulness-based stress reduction, teaches that living mindfully helps us break the cycle of reactivity that keeps us stuck in survival mode. By cultivating awareness, we create space to respond with intention, not just habit.

The Power of Emotional Frequency


Dr. David Hawkins’ research
shows that emotions carry distinct frequencies. Emotions like joy, love, and peace have expansive frequencies that raise our energy, creativity, and resilience. Conversely, fear, guilt, and apathy contract our energy and keep us stagnant.

It’s not about pretending negative emotions don’t exist; it’s about acknowledging them so we can consciously shift into more expansive states. Dr. Wayne Dyer often said, "Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change."

  2. Define Your Vision: Write down three feelings you want more of in your life (e.g., freedom, joy, peace) and what activities support them.
  3. Align Small Actions: Choose one action today that embodies your vision — like scheduling quiet time for reflection or expressing gratitude.


Research supports this: consistent alignment between actions and values improves wellbeing and life satisfaction (Lyubomirsky, 2005).
