This technique is inspired by the work of Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, a Harvard-trained neuroanatomist, who found that it takes just 90 seconds for an emotion to chemically process through the body—if we allow it to move without resisting or feeding it (source).

Neuroscience shows it takes just 90 seconds to shift an emotional state when you observe it without judgment.

Try this the next time you're feeling overloaded:

  • Pause: Close your eyes and locate the sensation in your body (tight shoulders, clenched jaw, shallow breath).
  • Breathe: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 2, exhale for 6. Repeat 3x.
  • Observe: Label the emotion neutrally—"tension," "overdrive," "anxiety."
  • Refocus: Ask: “What would calm, focused leadership look like right now?”


This technique builds resilience over time and supports adaptive leadership even in unpredictable moments.
